Countless players focus on the long game trying to attain maximum distance while they maybe add a lot of strokes to their score on the putting greens. Good putting will lower your score greatly so make a point of habitually using golf putting drills. Getting out on the practice green is key to improving your game and putting drills can make this more interesting. Certain drills will enable you to better the kinds of putts you are having the most problem with. Every distance of putts can be improved with putting drills.

You will notice these drills will aid with every part of your game on the green. Compete against fellow golfers by making the drills a game.

Putting Stroke

Place two clubs on the practice green, parallel, barely over a putter head width apart and align with the hole, so when you hit a straight putt the ball will drop. The parallel clubs will school you to maintain your stroke straight otherwise you are going to strike them. Your putter head has to be held square throughout to permit the ball to drop into the hole.

Weight/Distance

To perfect correctly weighted putts it is important to train your touch and feel for medium to long putting. To hit the putt with the correct weight depends on your muscle memory being trained so that your brain sends a precise message to your muscles. For this golf putting drill don't care about the line at this stage, it is just a way to instill in your game a feel of weight and distance. Walk on the practice green with 10 balls and stand between 15 - 40 feet (4.5 to 12 metres) from the edge. Strike the balls so that they touch the edge of the green but strive not to run up onto the fringe. To acquire a fine feel for touch and feel hit your ball to the outside of the green instead of the hole. By using this drill you will acquire self confidence on the course for long putts and should be able to drop your score.

Short Putts

This easy drill is wonderful towards improving your short putts. Commencing at in the region of 3ft (1m) from the hole position in a line 5 or 6 balls on a level section of the green spacing at roughly 12in (30cm) apart. Endeavour to hole the first ball. Once you have achieved holing the ball proceed to the following one until you fail. If you fail to hole collect up your balls and commence again. Holing all the balls without missing at all is the aim of this drill. This drill improves your short putting stroke and likewise works on your concentration and motivation.

Feel for Weight

Putting without ever looking up to discover where the ball has gone gives you a precise indication of your real sense for weight. With approximately 10 balls aim to a hole-free area. Endeavour to putt, one ball at a time, to a space approximately 25ft (7.5m) away. Putt all balls without looking up. Attempt to maintain everything the same weight, line, rhythm. When your balls are close together you have achieved your goal. You don't get to glance up till the final ball is on its way. Hopefully the balls will all be inside a circle of 2ft (75cm) in diameter. Repeat this drill with longer putts if your balls end up inside this diameter. Make the diameter of the circle bigger by 6in (15cm) for each 5ft (1.5cm) in length you add.

Repeated use of these golf putting drills, and others, will have a huge outcome on your card and therefore added enjoyment and satisfaction in your game.
