Moby Dick is one of the well-known works of Melville. Captain Ahab is the major role in this novel. Views may be varied from readers to readers, or from one section to another section of the nover. The most common comment upon Ahab Captain may be that he is mad. No matter how many bitter and nortorious comments have been made on him, I would like to explain something about him.
First of all, Captain Ahab is described as a man with stern, relentless expression. Moreover, one of his legs is replaced by one cut from the bone of the jaw of a whale, which is different from my previous knowledge that the missing hand or leg is usually replaced by a wooden one. Through it doesn't mention the reason how Captain Ahab's loses his leg, it can be indicated that it is brought in one of his fights against his preys the whales, or it is the White Whale that brings his leg away. It suggests that Ahab should be a brave man for he does not care about the pain of the mortal wound.
Secondly, not matter the experienced sailors Starbuck and Stubb, or other captains met on the way to the White Whale have persuaded him to give up the foolhardy idea and crazy actions to try to pursue the supernatural White Whale, Captain Ahab does not take any suggestion into consideration, instead, he continued his voyage to look for the monster. This is also an indication that Captain Ahab is a man of great resolution.
Furthermore, according to the experienced sailor and other captains words, the it is obvious for our readers to see that Captain Ahab is insane in mental conditons and mad in physical activities their eyes. However, it is those so called insane mental conditons and physical activities that leave me a deep impression, because I don't think a normal people could surpass his energy and determination. There is a not mainstream saying that people without logic and reasons could achieve his goal, it is true, I think Captain Ahab is undoubtedly a necessary supporting example of it.
Last but not least, Captain Ahab's resolution is cruel to his crew, but what he wants is to fuifill his pursue for that tremendous monster. I think it deserves to be respected.
