Live Longer, Look Better, Feel Fitter by Walking

I walk a lot. My job requires me to walk, I walk back from work most days and I walk the two miles or so when I go to meet my friend at the pub every Saturday. I maintain a steady weight and I feel fantastic. Contrast this with my school friends who I recently re-connected with on Facebook. All drivers, I was shocked at the way they have deteriorated over the thirty years since I last saw them. Fat and unhealthy they are heart attacks waiting to happen. They've become welded to their vehicles like rotund cyborgs.

I never learned to drive. That fact surprises many and shocks a few. It seems that to forego the experience, nay the right of passage, of learning to drive and experiencing the thrill of independence and mobility, is so left field as to be almost a perversion of the natural order. I'm not denigrating car drivers per se just the increasing reliance on them at the expense of well-being.

I have regrets of course. It'd be nice to get places more quickly and visit family more frequently than I do, but in my opinion, the benefits of relying on my own two feet over the years have vindicated my original decision.

The beauty of walking as a an asset to fitness is that it is just an extension of what you do naturally. No financial outlay just benefits both physically and mentally. You'll not only getter fitter naturally and in a more sustainable way but you'll have time to think, listen to music and contemplate existence.
