These wonderful ingredients are called antioxidants. They have conquered almost every page of health magazines, medical journals and every product from cosmetic cream to supplement pills. But what are antioxidants and how can they benefit your health and beauty?

Antioxidants are substances that fight the aging process that goes on in your body. The body does not produce these miracle substances on its own but you have to ingest them through natural sources. Antioxidants can be found in a large variety of foods.

Let's go back to the beginning. The body is continuously engaged in replenishing its cells through a process called cellular metabolism. During this process the body also produces energy and repairs damaged cells. Free radicals are often the one by product of cellular metabolism.

These free radicals are molecules that cause harm to your body. They do not have electron in them and so they are unstable. To fill up their own electron they take away electron from cells which ultimately damage the cells in a number of ways.

They often lead to undesirable effects on our bodies and development of diseases such as diabetes, cancer, neurological deficiencies and arthritis may take place with age. They may also make the bones brittle causing osteoporosis and thin skin wrinkles may appear on the face. Several external sources such as the ultra violet rays of the sun, radiation and cigarette smoke may allow the entry of free radicals into the body. The more the entry of free radicals inside the body, the greater the damage caused by them.

Antioxidants have been found to be very beneficial in solving the problem of free radicals. Antioxidant substances combine with free radicals and by neutralizing them they prevent these free radicals from causing further damage. Scientists don't have any idea of a recommended daily dose of antioxidants to correct free radical damage and the diseases that come with age, but they do know that eating foods rich in antioxidants makes a huge difference in how we live.

Examples of antioxidants are Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Lycopene, Lutein and Beta carotene. Certain minerals like zinc and selenium are not antioxidants but they boost the immune system of the body from within to fight against free radical damage.

Fruits and vegetables are considered to be a rich source of antioxidants. Antioxidants are also found in nuts, legumes, cold water fish, seafood and red meat. So, eating a varied diet of fruits, vegetables and the foods just named will increase the amount of antioxidants in your system and help reduce the incidence of disease. Eating fruits and vegetables in their natural form instead of juices brings the benefit of other nutrients found in the foods. Juices also contain a lot of sugar that is not needed by your body.

Thus it can be concluded that we can possibly prevent the damage caused to our body by free radicals by consuming foods rich in antioxidants and preserve our health and beauty by staying away from diseases.
