My wife Jen and I decided years ago that we would never work for anyone else again. In fact it all pretty much happened on 12/23/05 right after we hit a jackpot at our office Christmas party and walked away with almost $500 in bonus and gifts.
See, the next day, we looked at our take and each, and cried since it meant we could finally get each other a gift. On our own in Coral Springs, FL and without any family members who send money in time of need we finally had had enough. After a quick moment alone, staring at myself in the mirror while I shaved, I decided; No More.
I stepped out of our bathroom and into our bedroom and calmed my wife. Her eyes were still wet as she was still convulsing and trembling in anger and tears. "We're not going in, Screw it." The look of disbelief to this day is incomparable to any other I have seen. In fact she laughed it off till I put her clothes back in the closet and let her know we could get crappy jobs anywhere-and did soon after-but our peace of mind and Christmas together from then on would be on our terms.
Now don't let me lie and say it was all gravy. We were on the edge for years, one foot in our apartment while the other hovered closely to eviction. Always two months behind on everything while we learned our business, built a bag of tricks and addressed my conversion from Hardware and Networking. Little by little we built a client base and after we felt safe and somewhat sure in our ways-mostly due to client rankings and conversions-we set out, shoulder to the boulder ready to build our pyramid.
Let me tell you, when you set out on your own those rocks get heavy and that pyramid soon becomes an adobe hut or lean-to. We learned fast that all was not to be as golden as we first thought, even with our knowledge and client base we did not have jobs to fall back on now and the pressure to keep things running smoothly became overbearing. We thought about quitting, even planned it out once. Nevertheless, the thing was our clients were ranking and selling.
Whether it was Mother of Pearl Jewelry with a minimal budget or hundreds of thousands to promote their Men's body products; we were getting the message across and they were making money. Everybody was happy, so we could not quit.
