No More Retail Sex
No More Retail Sex

I remember it like it was yesterday - 1989. There I was a mature 8th grader who was curious about the big cement building located two blocks north of the Greyhound Station. My curiosity wouldn't chill out so, I went for it. I boldly walked to the building and when the door swung open, I smelled scents that reminded me of basement storage. I saw unique fashions, collectibles and prices of pure grandeur. Where was I? In a thrift shop. Yes ladies and gentlemen - a THRIFT SHOP! I pranced and bounced through the store trying on preppy blazers and wool mini-skirts which happened to match my opaque tights and penny loafers. 8 bucks! Why not. Done DEAL!

When I arrived home my mother and grandmother were in shock. "Where did you get these clothes from?" I proudly said, "The Goodwill!" Their eyes bulged and they snickered. Why? Because they were into retail sex. They loved the mall's pricy shoes and handbags. I love my family but, their philosophy is "You get what you pay for." I was born with a strong sense of self-identity so, their feelings didn't deter me. In fact, I became encouraged. I was so smitten by the experience that thrift shopping became my new extracurricular activity.

To date, my thrifting love hasn't changed and guess what? My mother and grandmother are STILL HAVING RETAIL SEX and they still laugh at me as I look nice, happy and lovely; all wrapped up in my thrifting activities. I am glad that I chose to lose my thrifting virginity!
