First trip abroad with a baby - Can I buy disposable nappies (diapers) on the Greek Islands?

Our first holiday abroad with our baby son, now nine months old, filled us with excitement. After caring for Luke in his early months and the pregnancy beforehand, it had been over 18 months since our last holiday so we felt we were long overdue a break. We decided on Pefkos, Rhodes, as our destination, hoping for September temperatures slightly lower and more comfortable for Luke than in the high season.

But amongst the excitement were questions questions about how we would cope with continuing to provide all that our son needed but in an unfamiliar country.

One of these questions was this

Can I buy disposable nappies on the Greek Islands?

We had started by putting several packs in our suitcases, but on weighing the cases we realised that the nappies were taking us well over our weight allowance for the flight. We decided to pack about 10 nappies in the suitcases, along with a few swim nappies, and another 10 in the hand luggage for use during the journey. We then bought an extra couple of packs and some more swim nappies in the departure lounge shops at the airport.

This turned out to be enough for about 10 days, and by the middle of week two we had to go looking for some extras in Pefkos. We found that the stocks of disposable nappies in the local supermarkets were quite limited, both in brand and in size, but there was enough choice to suit our needs. We also managed to find some swim nappies in a supermarket located in the busier tourist area of Pefkos. Many of the disposable nappies were displayed on high shelves, so could easily be missed. The location of the disposable nappies within the different supermarkets varied, so we found that we needed to either look around thoroughly or ask the shop owner.

Packs of baby wipes were quite widely available in the supermarkets. Both these and the disposable nappies seemed more expensive than at home, but really this was to be expected considering the extra cost of importing them to the island.

We didn't visit any of the larger shops on the island as we would have needed to hire a car to get there. Even so, we found that we could manage easily with the disposable nappies and baby wipes available locally in Pefkos.

Of course, all babies have their own individual needs. What works for one baby won't necessarily be right for another. And the availability of items at other times and in different parts of the Greek Islands may vary. These are just our experiences from our family holiday in 2010.
