Positano, Italy

If you are eager to avoid the normal tourist traps of Italy, like Amalfi and Tuscany, then why not try your luck at Positano?

Nestled in the south side of the Sorentine peninsula, the town is surrounded by steep cliffs which will give you some amazing views over the coast. The Spaggia Grande Beach is the most spectacular beach around, and if you turn back and look inland you will see the gorgeous buildings that perch on the cliffs, like steps.

The area is known for its dry, hot summers and mild winters, so perfect if you are hoping to get away and escape the frost and snow of England's horrible winters.

The town is great for tourists, and you can rent a boat, snorkel, windsurf, dive and indulge in a whole host of water activities. You can also take a boat over to the island of Capri, for a little glamour.

After a busy day, dine in one of the restaurants by the water for a gorgeous sea view, or go a little higher to one of the cliff top restaurants for something a little more spectacular. Try the locally caught seafood, or if you are not a fish fan, opt for a pizza which will generally be made in front of you.

Getting to Positano is pretty easy, fly to Naples and then get a taxi or bus to the town.
