11.04.2010 Just days after being knocked out of the No.1 ranking in the world by Brit Lee Westwood, Tiger Woods opened the HSBC Champions in Shanghai overnight with an impressive 4-under par for a 68.
Only five players edged out the Tiger, including the leader of the pack Francesco Molinari, who led with a bogey free 65, while shooting 7-under par, along with the new No.1 golfer in the world, Lee Westwood, who shot 6-under par and is in 2nd place.
Woods, who started out the day on the 10th tee, with an unforced error, which resulted in a bogey, could have fallen even further back in the pack after being left quite an ugly second shot on the 15th hole. Instead, the Tiger Woods that we have come to know, "tigered up" and sliced his four iron around the trouble ahead, and got an up-and-down to save par. He then went on to birdie three holes in a row, and had five birdies overall on the day.
"The things that I've been working on with Sean, it felt good today," said Tiger Woods.
"I hit a lot of good golf shots. I felt like I was able to control my distance well coming into the greens, and also putted really well today. Had good speed."
Could this be a major sign of improvement? Woods has often complained this year about his troubles on the greens and it has showed. The Tiger Woods we all know, used to drain 20-footers with ease, but has only struggled this year.
Woods, who mentioned a few weeks ago in an interview that he is "finally at peace" and he should hopefully be or getting very close to some sort of peace. It's been quite the tumultuous year for the golf great Tiger Woods, from a very public sex scandal, to multiple mistresses alleging all sorts of things, to a public and expensive divorce, most of all of it is now behind him, with golf championships to win, only in front of him.
So, could we be seeing a gradual escalation of Tiger Woodss golf game? He played very well at the Ryder Cup and was a key member of the U.S. team, but can he keep consistent with his game? Millions of people are hoping so.
When Tiger Woods was asked earlier in the week, whether we'd seen the best of him already, he quickly answered with a "No."
The acclaimed greatest golfer of all time has a lot to prove over the coming months and years, however if his recent showings are any indication to what is in store for the game of golf and fans worldwide, the show is not over for Tiger Woods it's just getting started.
Stay tuned for all of the latest Tiger Woods news this week, as he battles to win the HSBC Champions and regain his No.1 ranking in the world.
