One of the most popular questions I am asked these days is how to remove chloramine from water, especially because it is so hard to get rid of. This toxin is becoming an increasingly popular method of disinfecting the water instead of chlorine but has some very serious side effects the municipals don't want you to know.
The trouble with this substance is that very little is known about it. Even though chlorine is toxic and should be removed from your water before using, at least it has been studied for many years.
You don't only just need to know how to remove chloramine from water but also lead and THM's as it increases the levels of these significantly.
So what is it exactly? It is a mixture of ammonia and chlorine and is used because it is cheap and stays in the water for longer and supposedly removes more harmful organisms. However, the benefits really don't outweigh the risks as it is highly corrosive and leaches lead from the underground pipes and even the fittings in your home and also forms harmful THMs.
Chloramine kills fish and if you have fish at home you cannot use your tap water to fill up their tank, showing just how toxic it is!
It can cause respiratory problems, cancer, digestive conditions and other serious health problems.
Unlike chlorine, it is very hard to remove from the water supply. Until recently, most water filters could only remove a little but today there are some excellent activated granular carbon systems that can remove 99% of the chloramine, lead, THMs and all the other main contaminants like pharmaceuticals and pesticides.
To achieve these removal rates, look for a twin cartridge system that uses an ion exchange and sub micron filtering too.
You can select from many different models to suit your needs including countertops, showerhead and whole house water filtration systems. These types of carbon filters are also very cost effective with countertop ones starting from around $120.
Forget the reverse osmosis systems (RO) as the sellers of these often recommend adding a carbon filter on to improve the appalling removal rate. The point is you do not need the RO system in the first place, just the carbon filter!
Now you know how to remove chloramine from water safely and effectively, you can soon enjoy using pure and healthy water and protect your health for now and in the future too.
