This is the story of an all-American hero by the name of David Bronson. A man who epitomises the frontier spirit of America when it was a budding nation. Known as a cowboy in his later days, this was not always the case. Bronson hailed from the English village of Tunbridge Wells.
In 1804, Bronson left United Kingdom searching for adventure and profit in the new world of United States of America. He had no family or children, and at barely 17 years of age he managed to get a job on board ship as a ship hand..
Even the journey was an adventure in itself. The entire trip took well over six months, and by the time Bronson arrived on the east coast is he was exhausted and sick. Bronson did not fit in, and soon found himself the target of an extreme religious group called the Maine and Massachusetts Army. MMA for short. He was thrown into jail, wearing only his T-shirt and shorts, surviving a freezing winter was an achievement in itself.
In April 1805, he was sentenced to death by the kangaroo court of the MMA, and while being returned to the stockade to await his sentence, he escaped his guards and made his way west. Being pursued for the first 200 or 300 miles by his angry captors.
After being on the run for weeks, Bronson had managed to find better apparel that he is T-shirts, and he was soon several hundred miles south-west of his original captors. This was not much of an improvement, he was still penniless and he's only possessions were the T-shirt and breeches he stood up in. He was also conscious that the MMA were likely to still be hunting him and would be waiting for him if he ever returned east.
Bronson was in no rush, and managed to find several jobs during his journey west. His entire travels took him well over three years, and it was in 1807 that he finally turned up on the West Coast of the United States. Finally, fortune smiled on him and he was taken under the wing of a man called Andrew Buckland. Buckland was a cattle farmer and gave Bronson a job as one of his cowboys, his primary role was bringing herds down from the mountains to the frontier settlements around what is now known as Los Angeles.
He settled here for some years, and eventually became a very respected cowhand, and an expert rider. However in 1811 his mentor Andrew Buckland was murdered, and Bronson again found himself on the wrong side of the law as the prime suspect. A rider from the east also added to his troubles by alerting the townsfolk where Bronson was aware. That the organisation known as the MMA were still on his trail.
Once again Bronson faced life as a fugitive. He could not even return to its own Homestead, as that had been placed under martial law by the local militia. Wearing only his fightwear, and T-shirt, Bronson decided he would take a huge risk and prove he was innocent.
Many local people suspected that the real murderer of Buckland was a rival cattle man known as Stokes. Stokes was an unpleasant individual, who carried a very distinctive hunting rifle with a wide bore. Not only was the rifle itself distinctive, but it required a very particular sort of round. Made of individual pieces of lead mixed in with rock salt. Bronson had seen Buckland's body and was sure that Stoke's is rifle was the murder weapon. The very distinctive pattern of shot spread over Buckland's torso could only have been made by a weapon of this type. To prove his innocence, Bronson set out to acquire Stokes's weapon and show it to the authorities as the only possible murder weapon. Luck was on his side, as one of Stokes ex employees helped him complete the heist, eventually proving that Stokes was the murderer. Bronson undertook to steal this weapon, and prove that it must have been used to murder Buckland. With the aid of one of Stokes disenchanted employees he not only managed to steal this weapon, but prove that Buckland had used it to shoot Stokes.
The local militia were so relieved that Bronson was innocent, that they then did him the great favour of chasing the end MMA representatives from the land.Bronson went on to be one of the biggest cattle farmers in United States history. Proof indeed that you can live the dream in America
