Ultra-Portable Laptop Buying Guide

Obviously ultra-portable means lightweight, right? Generally the laptop you're looking for will weigh somewhere in the realm of four pounds. They're doing amazing things with lightweight materials these days, though, and it could be that you'll come across a laptop even lighter than that. Some will tell you that the lighter laptops lack the performance credentials of the heavier metals, but that's not necessarily true.

It is true that most ultra-portable laptops have low-voltage processors, like the Intel CULV for instance, but that doesn't mean that the processors can't do everything you need them to do and then some. In fact, the aforementioned Intel CULV is the ideal processor for business applications and for people on the go.

Resolution is the name of the game in terms of screen size. You may find yourself squinting at some of the screens, so test out the goods in the store before you purchase. If you find yourself having more than a few problems in terms of screen size, make an upgrade to a bigger size. If you can't do that, check out the font settings on the laptop and increase the size. There should be a setting to your liking on just about every market machine out there.

One of the ways you can cut costs is to get an ultra-portable laptop without an optical drive. I know it sounds almost heretical to skip the drive, but you can really save space and money if you don't need one. Unless you plan on watching DVDs on your really, really small screen, you can probably do without the player.

As with all purchase, compare as you dare. You never know what you can find out there for the price, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to slip into the right laptop.
