Bergen County, NJ new Mercedes dealer proud of Car of the Year nomination

It's all water under the bridge and apparently there are no hard feelings. Regarding the fizzled partnership of General Motors and Daimler AG, that is. In fact, your Bergen County, NJ new Mercedes dealer is excited about the nomination by General Motors of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class for North American Car of the Year.

That's right, formerly joined and now competitors in the auto industry, GM nominated a Mercedes-Benz model for this prestigious award. One reason it is such a big deal is because it's not chosen by one group or media outlet - it's a compilation of magazine, newspaper, TV, radio and online journalists from both the United States and Canada who help ferret out the best choices.

Mercedes-Benz has grown its U.S. customer base in the past decade with the introduction of some entry-level prices on base models and it doesn't seem to have hurt their high-end sales either. The company's reputation for quality and its tradition of excellence may have helped as well. Who doesn't want to drive a Mercedes if the price is right?

Bergen County, NJ C-Class buyers will be thrilled with the new 2011 models and the R-Class nomination should come as no surprise to a Mercedes-Benz owner. Mercedes did get a nod for the E-Class this year, but that nomination didn't get to the top spot as the R-Class nomination did.

In the 18th year for the North American Car of the Year, competition has to be getting steep, as up-and-coming brands like Hyundai/Kia have not only taken their share of the market, but begun to manufacture several models here as well.

So the R-Class may take the top model award. That would be a dream for Bergen County, NJ new Mercedes dealers, but we'll have to wait and see. But whether the R-Class captures this title or not, it's a ride worth taking, as are the other Mercedes-Benz classes.

It may indeed be the year of the Mercedes-Benz in North America, but for Bergen County, NJ C-Class buyers and buyers of other Mercedes-Benz models it can be today. Dealers have the new models in the showroom and can't wait to show them off.

Personally, I think a Mercedes-Benz showroom is rather overwhelming. Better to have an idea which model you love most before you go it. Even then, you will be tempted to consider them all, as they are quite irresistible.

As for GM, they seem to be recovering nicely from their financial woes and with some fun 2011 models like the Chevrolet Camaro they will probably come out okay. They are an American tradition, after all. Just wish they would bring back the Oldsmobile . . . .
