Everyone loves the thrills and spills offered by a theme park. Since most parts of the world have theme parks on hand, you should find one to visit not too far from where you are staying.
Johannesburg in South Africa is no exception to this. Just outside the main part of the city there is a theme park known as Gold Reef City. This unusual name gives you a clue as to some of what you can expect to find inside, so let's see what it has in store for you.
The theme here is a gold mine which dates back to the 19th century. However this isn't a gold mine that has been duplicated or created just for the theme park. Instead the park has been created around a genuine mine. While there are lots of great rides available here there is a lot more to see as well.
One of the highlights is the opportunity to go down into a genuine mine shaft. This is not for those who are claustrophobic, as you will soon see there isn't a whole lot of room down there. The experience includes a proper tour however, so you can find out exactly what life was like for the miners who actually worked down there many years ago.
Back up on the surface there are some more traditional rides to try out including several roller coasters, if you have the stomach for it. The Golden Loop, as you can imagine, takes you right round in a loop, throwing you upside down as it does so. It's best to try this and several of the other rides before lunch rather than just after!
You can also get a look at some of the caves and perhaps even get a tad wet if you opt to try out the Raging Rapids. All the family can pile inside one of these huge rings and see who gets the wettest as you head down the raging river.
Perhaps one of the most notable rides of all is called the Tower of Terror. There are some for whom the name of the ride itself is enough to put them off. And if you see what is in store for you, you may decide to give this one a miss. You will be suspended over an open mine shaft on this roller coaster, before plummeting into the dark and murky depths. Just imagine trying that one for the first time.
If you like the idea of visiting this theme park in Jo'burg, as the natives call it for short, flights to Johannesburg are easy enough to book. All you have to do is arrange some accommodation as well and you can soon look forward to trying out the Tower of Terror, among other incredible rides.
