This stretching effect thins out the tacky adhesive, giving it less effective of a hold on the hard surface. By letting go of the tab, and allowing the adhesive to become a bigger solid mass again, it's ready to stick on to another spot.
This type of towel hook is a little newer on the market. For that reason, there is not a lot of variety in the styles, shapes and colors of them. However, keep in mind, this is a towel we're talking about. While it may be a basic black white or beige hook you're putting on the wall, you're not really going to see it. A towel will be hanging over the majority of the hook, covering it anyways.
The nice thing about these kinds of towel hooks is that you can use as many as you want in whatever size space you want. Traditionally, when you want multiple towels on a wall, you have to buy a towel rack with a specific number of hooks on it. This way, you can line up the towels side by side, in any sort of decorative formation, and space them as far apart as you want each one to be individually spaced. And if you decide at any point in time you don't want that many or like the formation they're in, You can pull them off, remove them and replace them wherever you think they need to be.
