In D.C. Sniper, B-horror director Ulli Lommel attempts to retell the tale of two home-grown terrorists who shot random bystanders in Washington in 2002.
Unfortunately, it plays loose-and-fast with the facts.
Horror genre actor Ken Forsee plays Beltway Sniper John Allen Muhammad, an angry Muslim and former soldier who wanted the world to pay for its sins against blacks and Muslims. Viewers are given a front-row seat to his indoctrination of Jamaican immigrant 17-year old Lee Boyd Malvo.
Instead of Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose - the main man fronting the investigation - the film follows two investigators - one named Cowboy for his boots and hat - who are trying to track the killers. One investigator who also trying to track his runaway daughter, whose story parallels the investigation.
Interspersed with their individual journeys are interview-style segments from Muhammad, Malvo, a defense attorney, and a conspiracy theorist, who give their own "insights" into the killings.
D.C. Sniper isn't a horror flick -Lommel's genre - nor is it a 48 Hours true-to-life program. It is an interpretation of what happened eight years ago - and the facts are considerably questionable.
Written by both Lommel and Forsee, the tale is told in a mixture of dramatization/reenactment and documentary styles.
