The History of the Moroccan Caftan

The Moroccan caftan or kaftan is one of the most beautiful dresses in morocco. It is what women wear in special occasions such as a wedding or baptism. It is as old as the country itself. But it has known some creative transformations over the years which made it the dream dress that every Moroccan girl must have.

Butwhat is the history of thecaftan?

The Moroccan caftan (alqaftane)is anancient costume dating back tothe Greco Roman era. It has been through several revisions over time. While the principle of a full traditional attire always remained the same, Its style variations have undergone some changes over time.

Originally, only the sultans and their wives had the privilege of obtaining a garment as expensive and fashionable as the caftan because the designers spent months to design it and the craftsmen took even more time to shape it, with its embroidery andhand-beading, weaving in with gold and silver thread.

Moroccan caftan has alegacy that has lasted over time and despite all the invasions that occured. But those invasions brought more creative ideas and helped shape the caftan.

The kaftan has appeared in North Africa in the 3rd century AD. Arabs thenwarmly adopted it for pregnant women in the palace. The caftanwas remodeled following monarchies that succeeded, sometimes near the body, sewed in weaves light and silky, perfectly matching the shape of the body, sometimes wide, short, worked in thicker weaving.

This costume has been largely developed now and expands in the 21st century. This is evident in every home inMaghreb as weavingis less expensive and stylish cuts are rallying with tradition and modernism, putting a woman on a pedestal under her dress and givingher the look ofa princess.
