Lan and Wlan(A) : Network setup and optimize

We tell you how to set up the perfect network. Easy access from multiple PCs to the Internet, you share a printer and share files - via cable, via radio or via the mains.

The PC is a sociable guy. More and more households and small businesses have two or three computers that have the same broadband Internet connection or printer to share. This article of our sister publication PCtipp explained to you step by step what you need for a small network, and how to connect multiple computers and laptops works best. In addition, we address common problems, special cases and tuning options.

Optimal network

This section is about the components of a network and their configuration. Once you know which device meets the task, set up your network in one's sleep.

The computer

Current desktop computers and notebooks always have a network connection. A look in the Windows Device Manager provides information about the condition of the driver. In Windows XP, you go right click on My Computer on the properties. Change to the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button.

In Windows Vista, open the Start menu, right-click Computer, and then also go to the properties. In the left pane of the window you will find a direct link to Device Manager. Fold under the two systems over the plus sign to the branch network adapter. In notebooks you see at this point usually several components in our example, an IEEE 1394 network adapter (FireWire), a wireless adapter for WLAN (wireless network) and the desired network connection, often seen also in terms such as LAN, NIC or Ethernet
