Maybe You Are Stressed Out, But Really What Is Stress?

We all experience stress during our lives, sometimes much more than others, and some people experience stress far more often and intensely than others. We all know when we are stressed and hopefully what causes stress for us, but what exactly is stress? How is it defined?

Stress is anything you feel when you are afraid of what's happening or simply annoyed at what's happening. For example, being robbed at gun point will cause very significant stress, and so will being annoyed at standing in a long line to get to an inept cashier. The body's "fight or flight" response is triggered due to the stressful situation, and we all have this "fight or flight" response.

There is a reason for our fight or flight response, and when in this state for short periods of time we are more alert and focused, exactly what we need to help protect ourselves. It uses lots of mental energy though, and if we stay in this mode too long or are in it too often we get fatigues and certainly irritable in most cases. We get tired, worn down, and grumpy.

The body is not designed to stay like this constantly, and if we regularly experience high levels or stress a number of health issues can develop. Many of us have experienced these first hand.

Next time you are stressed, think about what you can do about it. If busy, just write it down and revisit it later on. There may be something you can do, and if there is nothing than there is no reason to stress anymore; it is out of yours hands.

Now if much of your stress comes from a job, a relationship, or similar, think about what you can do to reduce the level. You may or may not be able to and it may be time to move on. This is something you need to rationally think about when calm, not during the moment when scary or annoying things occur.

You may find you have plenty of control over some stressful situations. For example both my job and being late were causing me grief, so I switched jobs and also strive to be early, which helps enormously.

If you do not deal with excessive stress, it may cause significant health problems later down the road. It's best to try and handle them before the health issues arise!
