RSA - caught between a rock and a hard place when serving alcohol to drunk clubbers

Nightclub bar staff say they are caught between a rock and a hard place when serving alcohol to drunk clubbers.

Despite training in Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA), most bar staff disregard intoxication levels of customers because if they cut off their drinking they stood to lose their hours from 'profit hungry' club owners or face physical violence from the drinkers said Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union assistant secretary Michael De Bremmi.

Fair Trading Minister Peter Lawlor said that the Government was reviewing the recommendations of the alcohol-related violence inquiry but did not think more liquor licensing officials needed to be on the beat.

The union is calling for actively monitored CCTV footage in Surfers Paradise clubs, more liquor licensing officers to enforce responsible service of alcohol and more backing from club owners for their staff to refuse service to drunk patrons.

MOVES to tighten pub curfews will punish hotels that serve alcohol responsibly and people who are law-abiding patrons, Clubs NSW chairman Peter Newell says. Research published from Newcastle University's school of medicine found assaults plummeted by 37 per cent over an 18-month period after a 3am curfew in Newcastle was introduced.

The Last Drinks campaign, comprising the NSW Police Association, the Australian Medical Association (NSW), the Health Services Union and the NSW Nurses Association, says the restrictions are an overwhelming success and should be rolled out statewide.

The Police Association wants the curfew to be implemented statewide.

But Mr Newell says a blanket approach will punish the clubs and pubs that are serving alcohol responsibly.

"Target the venues that need targeting instead of targeting everybody," Mr Newell said.
