Houston Ford Dealers Discuss Different Driver Distractions

There has been a lot of talk in recent years regarding the dangers of driving while using a cell phone. There is little doubt that the distractions of talking and texting can result in accidents. While there are many ways to reduce cell phone distractions, they are not the only things that get a drivers attention while on the road. Houston Ford dealers want to share with drivers the three types of distractions noted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Cognitive distractions- There are times when drivers can travel miles without really paying attention to what they are doing. In these situations it is almost as if the vehicle is on auto-pilot while the driver is thinking of things other than driving. Houston Ford dealers remind drivers that when their attention is on anything other than the task at hand, there is an increased risk of accident.

Manual distractions- When you perform a task while driving that requires one or more hands to be taken off the wheel, you are experiencing a manual distraction. This can be something as simple as grabbing something to eat at a drive-thru or trying to operate other vehicle functions.

Visual distractions- The third type of driver distraction involves a visual distraction. This occurs when a driver is looking at something other than the road ahead. Visual distractions are a necessary part of operating a vehicle. Drivers are required to process a lot of information that is happening directly in front of them. For this reason, the Ron Carter team suggests learning how to recognize visual and other distractions so that you can eliminate any that are not necessary to perform the task of driving.
