We are now going to discuss the issue of leaky gut. Although leaky gut is not as well recognized in traditional medical communities, it has been around for a very long time in the complementary medical system. So to explain leaky gut a little, it is the process by which the epithelial lining of the digestive tract, also known as the mucosal layer, is broken down. Microscopic holes begin to form and this is what is known as leaky gut because they allow food proteins and other toxins, like those from yeast and bacteria, to leak through the mucosal lining. These proteins and toxins, which normally would not get through, work their way into the lymphatic system, into the bloodstream and can cause a hyper stimulated immune system and stimulate inflammation, all due to leaky gut.
Not everyone believes in leaky gut and the issue can be quite controversial. There are many physicians and scientists out there who dispute the idea of leaky gut and dont believe that holes can form in the gut, and they are correct to an extent since they are not actually holes per se. For the normal process of nutrient absorption, the cells of the digestive tract are grouped very tightly together, letting vital nutrients in and keeping the harmful toxins out. Those key nutrients are absorbed through the cell surface and excreted out through the other side.
But things can get through between the cells that should not be able to in the case of leaky gut. The tight junction is a chemical that makes it possible for cells to be attached to one another. An analogy for this is Velcro, the cells become velcroed to each other in an attempt to protect itself from absorption of harmful things. However, when there is a breakdown in the tight junction, and the Velcro begins to come apart slightly, you have microscopic gaps which represent leaky gut. Now food proteins and toxins can get through the mucosal lining and into the bloodstream that should not be allowed through. And this is the syndrome known as leaky gut.About the Author:
