Going into the final minutes of the Glentoran versus Portadown game at The Oval recently, no one in the crowd could have imagined in their wildest dreams, that we were just about to witness one of the most talked about goals, not only in The Irish league but perhaps worldwide.
Matty Burrows has always been able to find the net, he is a natural goalscorer, but his strike deep into injury time, would over the next few days and weeks be seen all across the globe. Television channels from across Europe would come knocking on his door asking for interviews, Sky Sports voted it their Goal of the Month, BBC's Football Focus also picked it up and nearly 4 million people have viewed the video, thankfully recorded by GlentoranTV on youtube.
A Glentoran supporter could not believe his eyes while in New York in Times Square looking at the big screen he saw action coming from The Oval in East Belfast and Mattys match winning back heel volley.
And so the debate began. Was it one of the best goals ever scored? Many people thought it certainly could be. Now Mattys goal has been nominated for The Ballon d'Or - Puskas Award. It is one of the top ten goals from across the world, alongside some goals scored by some of the best players and biggest names in world football.
So Glentoran Football Club who are now fighting for their very future due to large debts, will have their name up in lights when the results are given out in Zurich on the 11th January 2011.
How nice it is that Belfast is in the news for all the right reasons. Thanks Matty and thanks Glentoran TV.
