Vibrams Fivefingers are an increasingly popular footwear choice for barefoot runners and outdoors-y types, but with so many different models and styles, it can be tough to find the shoe that's right for you.
Three important factors go into picking the right pair of Vibrams Fivefingers - and it all has to do with the type of running you want to do.
Vibrams Fivefingers Factor #1) Protection.
Barefoot running is arguably better for your back, joints, and feet than traditional running, but depending where you're running and what you're running on, you may need some pretty burly Vibrams Fivefingers to protect your feet the best.
Any of their models will protect your feet from the usual culprits - rough roads, small stones and broken glass - but if you're going to be running in areas with poor traction, or larger (or sharper) debris, then you'll want to look at the Trek or Treksport models, which have substantially more tread.
Likewise, if you're going to be running in icy cold conditions or doing any watersports, then the Vibrams Fivefingers Flow model is what you're looking for.
Vibrams Fivefingers Factor #2) Keeping Stuff Out.
Running on the beach or in the woods is lots of fun, until your Vibrams Fivefingers fill up with random sand and twigs - then you're likely to get blisters, sore spots and other fun foot injuries.
Avoid the problem altogether with the Vibrams Fivefingers KSO models - they've got a protective upper that velcro's snugly over your feet to Keep Stuff Out (hence, KSO).
The specific models with uppers are: the KSO, The KSO Trek, The Treksport, and The Flow. But choose wisely, these each have different features and intended uses. For instance, if running in fields is your pleasure then the Vibrams Fivefingers Treksport is more shoe than you may need, and the KSO or the Trek would work great.
Or, if you love running on beaches, then you'll want to grab either the Vibrams Fivefingers KSO, or the Flow, depending on how much you want to spend, and how much you want to be running in the water :-)
Vibrams Fivefingers Factor #3) Price.
I know that the Treksport model can be a little pricy (around $100) but if you don't need anything fancy, the Vibrams Fivefingers classic model will work great (and at $75 it's a lot more affordable).
Vibrams Fivefingers make a great line of shoes, but even with the best footwear possible, your barefoot style running efforts could be cut short by injury if you're not prepared.
