A guide to the winter flu jab

The swine flu epidemic might now have passed, but that doesn't mean there still isn't a risk that you might catch a bout of flu this winter. There's a flu outbreak every year, normally over a few weeks in late November and December. Flu (or influenza to give it its proper title) spreads through coughs and sneezes of those who are infected. This is why it can spread so quickly amongst families, schools, workplaces and other public places.

Thankfully, you can reduce the risk of catching flu 70-80% by getting a flu jab at your local pharmacy or doctor's surgery. It's offered primarily to at-risk groups who are at greater risk of developing serious complications from flu, such as bronchitis, pneumonia and breathing problems. This includes people with diabetes or asthma, children with neurological disorders, heart disease and long term illness and anybody over 65,

Every year up to 7 million people get the flu jab. So if you want to avoid the risk of flu this year, pop down to your local pharmacy for the flu jab. It involves little more than a quick pin prick and will immunize you against flu for the next year.

With pharmacies on most high streets you can pop in without an appointment, and they can provide you with expert advice on common health complaints all year round.
