Home improvement solutions such as insulation assist their users to save considerably on energy bills. Not only does it make the home comfortable but enables judicious usage of natural resources. The amount of energy conserved, however depends on the size and shape of the house to be insulated as well as the local climate.

The natural course of heat flow is, from a warmer to a cooler region. Following the same universal laws, the temperature of the warmer living spaces becomes cooler in winter and the exact opposite happens in summers.

Many an insulation options are available in the market today depending on the space to be insulated and the degree of insulation required. For instance, Spray Radiant Barrier is one of the most basic and convenient options to insulate the attic.

It is a reflective material available in liquid form and can be applied easily. A spray radiant barrier also exhibits very low emissivity. Thus it reflects as much as 75% of the total light incident and does not conduct it further downwards.

There is a wide range of insulating materials available today. Each has a different characteristic property making it appropriate for specific insulation needs. One of the most extensively employed materials used now-a-days is foam.

Foam comes in two variants viz. Closed Cell Foam or 2lb foam and open cell foam or 1/2lb foam. The closed cell foam has a higher density and thus a greater capacity of expansion. On the other hand, open-cell foam is a lower density version and accordingly expands less.

Being denser than the open-cell version, closed cell foam has lesser pores. Therefore, the 2lb foam is more compact and hence has a higher R-value. A greater R-value simply implies that the 2lb Foam insulates more efficiently than the open-cell foam.

Foam has one more desirable characteristic; it can adhere well to the point where it is applied. This helps in convenient application of the insulating material. Given the ease of installation, foam insulation can also be applied without employing professional help.

Foam insulation can be used for retrofitting and can be installed when the structure is being erected. Moreover, it is both airtight and waterproof and thus no additional treatment need to be done. Insulation is one of the most effective ways to cut down on the total household energy consumption. It therefore is not only light on the pocket of the end- user but has a beneficial effect on the environment as well.
