A survey has revealed today that more than one in ten drivers have been involved in an accident after swerving to avoid potholes, caused by the bad weather we had in Britain at the start of the year. More than half the drivers in the UK feel that the conditions of the roads are unacceptable, and fifty eight percent went as far as to say that they feel the government should make road repairs a matter of priority. The roads descended into chaos after December, when a flurry of snowstorms brought our roads to standstill, leaving hundreds of people stranded in their homes, and a massive increase on the amount of accidents on the roads. As the ice began to melt, it became clear that we had another problem on our hands; the roads had split causing massive potholes in the tarmac. In February alone, almost two thousand claims were made to Car Insurance companies, at the cost of 2.85 million, and in surrey alone there are nearly 2000 registered potholes, leaving the counties residents struggling to avoid accidents and damages to their cars that these dents in the road bring.
Cyclists are also suffering, there has been a record increase in the amount of cycle related injuries caused as a direct result to going over a pothole. The CTC, the UK's cycling organisation, has been inundated with complaints about the state of the roads, and feel that something should be done.
Smithy Lane in Huddersfield is currently the record holder for the most potholes; residents have reported 124 over a one hundred and twenty metre stretch.
