Popular winter activities in Lapland
Popular winter activities in Lapland

There are many activities to enjoy in Lapland and some are more popular than others, there are far too many to mention here and so I am going to select the most popular and explain a little about each.

The Husky safari has to be one of the most popular; there is the opportunity to go on short safaris, which are best for the children. There are also half day safaris and full day Safaris. The Husky farm is where you will find the adorable Huskies and some of their puppies, after a short talk and informative talk; you will be led to the dogs and the husky sledge. You will have the opportunity to drive the husky sledge yourselves with the rest of your party or family sitting comfortably in the sledge. The views are breathtaking and the sheer strength and beauty of the dogs will inspire you. You will take a short trip through the forests of Lapland and stop off at the halfway point where you will enjoy a talk with the Husky guide and a hot drink.

Cross country skiing is another favourite and is an alternative to downhill skiing. The equipment can be hired for a small fee and cross country skiing can usually be done in addition to your other activities. The children take remarkably well to cross country skiing and most resorts have different routes you can take depending on your ability. Unlike downhill skiing, cross country skiing is slower paced and some would say harder work but none the less enjoyable.

Santa Claus is an activity you will not want to miss, different resorts have different arrangements as far as Santa goes but there is normally a Santa village in most resorts where Santa will be based and where you can visit. There is the opportunity in some resorts to have Santa visit you complete with Rudolph and the Elves.

Reindeer safaris are also really popular with the opportunity to ride around frozen, vast lakes in the Reindeer sleigh. Some of the activities will include local knowledge on the Reindeer and the trips range from short trips to whole day activities.

Snowmobiling is also extremely popular and most activity centres will arrange everything as well as the clothing you will need to have. Snowmobile trips range from short trips through the snow covered forests to whole days out to places like the snow village and the ice hotel which is a fantastic experience.

Whatever you decide to do there is certainly lots to keep you busy and I have only mentioned some of the most popular activities, there are of course many, many more. Lapland is a fantastic place and as well as getting involved in the activities, you must also make time to play in the snow because there is lots of it and there is nothing better than getting out there and having some fun
