Gifts for Boys: The Five Best Lego Games for Boys 5-8

Are you already at a dead end with your Christmas shopping?

Is there a 5-8 year old boy on your shopping list? Do you know what to get him? If you think he might like Lego, read about this year's best Lego games, and you'll find something that will be a terrific gift.

If you're not sure about buying Lego, don't fret. It's one of the most popular boys' toy brands. I can tell you from experience, it's very challenging to find a young boy who doesn't like Lego.

For this year's holiday season, the Lego company has created several fun new games. I can vouch for them because the 7-year old boy in my house loves all of these games.

So, here you go ... the top 2010 Lego games:

LEGO Hogwarts Game (3862)

Your little Harry Potter fan will love this game. Based in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, it includes all of its moving staircases and secret passages. Getting through all of this can be hard. The winner is the first player to race through the castle and gatherall of his/her homework. A great family game for 2-4 players.

LEGO Minotaurs Game (3841)

Minotaurs are mythical creatures who protect a hidden temple deep inside a labyrinth. The first player to lead his or her heroes to the temple wins this game. However, you need to block your opponents and work around the Minotaur to win. The kids, especially the ones who like mythology, will love this game.

This game also teaches important critical thinking skills. Critical thinking is a great skill to develop in kids 5-8, often a component that's missing from other board games.

LEGO Creator: The Race to Build It Board Game

If you want a Lego game with a lot of pieces, you've got it. Included is a game board, a six sided die,20 model cards, 19 special pieces, 4 LEGO Ball Cap Pawns, 49 bricks, and an instruction book. Overall, there are 20 unique models to build, mostly vehicles and robots. Players collect pieces as they race the track and assemble their models.

While this is a lot of fun, it's another game that can frustrate 4-5 year olds. Here's some advice: when they don't win, allow them to finish.

Lego Creationary (3844)

This combination of pictionary and Lego is perfect for family game night. Playing this together will be fun for adults and kids. I only have two minor nits to pick with this game you might find that it's challenging for kids and sometimes, it can take a while to complete.

Lego Robo Champ (3835)

Get ready, there's a robot-building contest! When you put your robot together using all of the correct color parts, you'll win a trophy and become Robo Champ. However, it's not that easy. You'll also find that other players might have parts you need. So before you can win, you'll have to swap for your parts. This game is for up to 3 players and takes about 15-20 minutes to complete.

At our house, we play it all the time and never get bored.

Important shopping advice: Watch out for resellers who are marking up the prices of these games. You can often find a better price on Amazon if you look for other listings.
