Work Or Die

It's common knowledge that exercise will extend your life. Happiness, energy, and a robust feeling are all easier to achieve with exercise. The reason for the common belief is scientifically proven - and this document spells out the results.

Sitting most of the day will shorten your life - this is the undeniable truth. Between 1993 and 1996, 120,000 people were tracked by researchers at Ochsner Health Systems in Louisiana and their records prove it out.

When the body mass index (BMI) and smoking were removed from the 13 year study, 6 hours of sitting a day was left as a major health risk. Women that sat less than 3 hours a day had a risk of death that was 63 percent less than women that sat for 6 hours a day. The same comparison for men resulted in a 17 percent higher risk of dying during the 13 years of the study.

Early death risk was lessened with exercise, but not as much as expected. Heart disease increase by muscle inactivity was proposed by the researchers as a root cause, but not investigated as this is only a statistical analysis.

Jay Brook, study author and oncologist stated in a USA Today story that "It's one more reason to get up and walk." Continuing, he says, "If you're in a job that requires sitting, that's fine, but anytime you can expend energy is good. That's the key."

This reinforces the principal that people are meant to move. Sitting behind a reception desk, computer, or steering wheel is becoming more and more common for a job. By not moving your body while at this task, you are killing yourself.
