subject: How to train a dog - Stop Your Puppy From Biting [print this page]

Your puppy is biting a lot lately, especially since he turned 11 weeks old. It's because he is in the teething period. Naturally, your puppy learns to inhibit his bite when he is four months from his sibling, parents and friends. As your puppy is staying with you instead of his family members, you have to take up the responsibilities to train him. First, whenever your puppy bites you, he is trying to play with you. You need to show him that you are suffering. When he bites you, try to yield or making noise showing you are in pain some thing like "NO!" or "ENOUGH!". Your puppy will get shock immediately, then leaving him alone for a few seconds. Remember to keep this action consistent and persistent when training your puppy. When you are playing with him, and he bites you, exchange your hand for a toy and give him praise when he bites it, instead of biting you! Here are some tips for the toys you should give to him in the teething period. 1) Putting a nylon bone in the freezer and whenever he starts biting, give him the bone as the cold bone would numb his teeth a little and of course the chewing eases the pain too. 2) Get an old towel damp it then put it in the freezer; the coldness will soothe your puppy's gums. 3) You can buy rope toys for your puppy in the shape of bones or cute little animals and soak them in water and then put them in the freezer. Give the frozen rope toy to your pup and the cold will help soothe hurting gums and provide an appropriate chew toy. As no two dogs are the same this also applies to any training program. What works for one dog might not necessarily work for another.
