In 2003, Nobel Prize-winning scientist Louis Ignarro addressed the Herbalife Extravaganza event in Las Vegas. Ignarro had recently joined the Herbalife Nutrtion and Scientific Advisory Board, and had developed a new product - Niteworks - which he unveiled to the cheering crowds. He talked about his revolutionary research regarding Nitric Oxide in the cardiovascular system which had won him the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1998, and how the fruits of his cutting-edge research had been invested in his Niteworks products, which he boasted could lead to the eradication of heart disease.
But the product's integrity has been called in to question by a number of critics who question not only the product itself, but also the motivations behind it.
The product has never been tested on human beings, only mice and this has led other distinguished scientists to ask how anyone of Ignarro's stature can make such impressive claims about a product without having first conducted scientific tests on human beings. The assumption that the product's results would transfer identically between mice and humans is one which has been challenged by Ignarro's contemporaries, including Robert Furchgott and Ferid Murad, who shared the stage, and indeed the prize, with Ignarro at the Nobel awards in 1998. The only way to be sure that the product would work on humans, they have suggested, is to test it on humans. Making solid claims about the advantages of Niteworks before such tests have been carried out was, in the opinion of these other scientists, premature and unprofessional.
Other criticisms include the accusation that the benefits of the product could be easily obtained from elsewhere at a fraction of the cost, and also the fact that Ignarro has a financial interest in the product succeeding, meaning that his motives could be called in to question. Has Ignarro sold-out his principles for financial gain?
Well, actually, probably not. Ignarro is far too respected in the scientific community to consciously commit to a venture that could damage a reputation that has taken him his lifetime to cultivate. His motives are probably genuine, and meant with the best of intentions.
So Herbalife's dark secrets may not be as dark as they first appeared. Probably, Ignarro's involvement in Niteworks would be considerably more valuable if he did not have such a blatant financial interest in the success of the product, but even his fiercest critics accept that the ingredients in the products do benefit your health, albeit they are said to be slightly overpriced. The science behind the product is also backed up by the breathtaking resume of its developer which inspires a degree of confidence in the product.
Herbalife are aware of the criticisms they face, and the obstacles they must overcome, but their intentions seem genuine, and their commitment to transparency under Michael O Johnson must be commended.
