Christmas Markets in Europe
Christmas Markets in Europe

The festive season is upon us, and the twinkly lights are being wheeled out across little villages across the country. As soon as bonfire night has passed, we will be slap bang on the way to Christmas!

If you, like me, love the festivities, then somewhere like Cologne is a great place to visit. German markets take the festivities to a new level, with little stalls offering sweet little presets and gifts for all the family. But the real appeal to the German market isn't the gifts, but is more the food stalls that are peppered in between. Offering German beer, gingerbread delicacies, spicy biscuits and other exciting treats, the stalls make it easier for you to get around, providing much needed fuel.

The best of the seven markets is the oldest; Neumarkt, which offers interesting wares such as badger hair shaving brushes for the man in your life, beautiful little Christmas tree decorations and Italian cheese stands.

If you want to opt for something a little less traditional, then the Stadtgaardten, on the outside f the city is the alternative option, with reggae Christmas carols and fair trade gifts.

At night time the markets become fayre like with street performers and bands keeping the atmosphere lively. Pack a coat though, as this time of year Cologne is prone to snow and ice.

If you are planning to travel to any of the European Christmas markets that go on from the beginning of November, then make sure you have Holiday Insurance to keep you protected.
