Furniture for Different Purposes
Furniture for Different Purposes

Furniture is an everyday thing that many people take for granted, but where would we be without our comfortable sofas, beds, tables and chairs? Such things are a major part of the civilised world. Furniture serves many different purposes from providing us with somewhere to sit and sleep in comfort and safety, to store our belongings out of sight and to place our computers and food on.

But furniture for our homes is quite different from commercial furniture. Restaurant furniture such as tables and chairs needs to be extra strong to stand up to the greater usage. It also has to be extremely stable so that customers of all sizes and shapes can sit on it without fear of falling off or being tipped over if a chair leg should break. These days, much commercial furniture is made from strong plastic with metal frames so that it will not break. The quality is really heavy so that it will last longer and be easier for people to use. Restaurant furniture also needs to be washable.

School furnitureneeds to be both strong and stable to stand up to years of wear and tear, but some of it also needs to be much smaller than most other furniture to fit in with the needs and sizes of small children. School furniture is traditionally made from timber, although this is gradually changing especially with computer chairs that revolve. However, the timber tables and chairs of yesteryear were so well-designed and made that they lasted for many decades.

Commercial furniture such as office furniture was once more practical than aesthetic, but that is changing now, with subtle colours creeping in to make office decor more attractive, rather than the drab browns and greys that were once all that was available. Metal filing cabinets were and still are - sought after for their strong and fire resistant properties, but even they have been rejuvenated with coloured powder coating to give a more attractive finish.
