Many people who frequent the hardware store notice that security cameras have gotten less expensive and for a lot of people; this has left them wondering if they should get a home security camera system, and if they need one. Since there is not a monthly fee to have them, I personally don't see why more people don't have them.
Basically, you just need to decide how much you're willing to spend for peace of mind. For example, if a new security camera cost $100, and you would put one on your front door and one on your back door; do you think it's worth spending $200 to have that peace of mind? Now, keep in mind that you also have to buy some sort of receiver they can send the information to, but those are usually only 50 to 100 dollars. What a lot of people who ask this question don't realize is that home security camera systems can have more than just burglar applications. What do I mean?
Say that your kids are on summer break, but you're not. I know, hard to believe; but it happens sometimes. They want to play outside, but you have to get work done in the house. If you have a wireless camera system and a receiver and your office or kitchen, they can play and you can keep working at the same time. This is a great compromise that allows you to get your work done and them to get rid of some excess energy, making everyone's life easier in the long run.
They're also a great vandalism deterrent. I used to live in a neighborhood where everything got spray painted, and at first I just bought a dummy security camera to scare the kids off. Unfortunately, two rocks later they figured out that it was a fake camera. Then I put up and installed a real home security camera system with a protective housing, they stopped coming to my house because they knew that I had video that I could send the police.
To summarize, whether or not you need a home security camera system is largely up to you and your budget. However, I personally recommend one if you can afford it.
