Do you look at your mother or grandmother to get a sense of how your skin will look as you age? You know your boyfriend or husband does just that! Times are changing and our family is not a good prediction of what our face will look like as we age.
Guess what? Our environment and daily habits are responsible for 80% of our causes of aging. The other 20% is the family link or DNA from elders. So, you are in control of your skin's destiny. Get started today on your road to great skin because it is never too late to be proactive. The earlier you start making the right skincare choices the better and implement them into your personal daily care routine right away.
Let's talk a little about the skin in general so you can understand better how our skin ages physiologically before getting into more causes of aging. The top layer of the skin is the epidermis and it renews itself completely every month. This renewal process slows as we age and takes longer for the skin to rejuvenate. The dead cells need to slough off and when they don't do this as rapidly as they used to, the barrier layer on the epidermis gets thicker and the dead cells fill the pores making them look larger. This is why exfoliation is so extremely important to assist the natural process of shedding cells to reveal the fresh new cells underneath.
The middle layer of skin is where two important structural proteins are produced: collagen and elastin. *Collagen gives skin its strength and fullness, while elastin gives skin its elasticity and stretch. Both of these break down naturally with age and sun exposure which is one of the biggest causes of aging. As the collagen and elastin fibers collapse, the smooth skin of our younger days becomes wrinkled and loosens.
There are two ways that skin ages: intrinsically and extrinsically. *Intrinsic, biologic aging includes factors such as genetics, ethnicity, and one's underlying health or disease state. *Extrinsic, environmental aging accounts for 80% of your appearance and is greatly under your control. It includes such factors as sun exposure, smoking, excessive alcohol intake and diet.
The top extrinsic factors that relate directly to causes of aging are: sunlight, smoking, amount of sleep and sleep positions, stress, diet and dieting, exercise, climate, alcohol and facial expressions.
Skin tone is also related to causes of aging. The color of your skin contributes to how your skin reacts to these environmental factors and how quickly it ages. *In general, the darker your complexion, the better able your skin is to resist environmental assaults and the more slowly it ages, but all skin tones are negatively impacted by the sun.
Watch for future articles from me which will address each of these extrinsic factors and how we can take control.
