Tom Cruise is one of the biggest and highest paid actors in Hollywood today. He regularly rakes in an astounding 15 to 20 million dollars per movie. There is one reason he makes the big bucks and one reason only; he puts meat in the seats. When a production company releases a movie with Tom Cruise in a leading role they know one thing, the movie is almost guaranteed to make money. But don't let this statement fool you, he can act too. He has delivered several terrific performances over the years and he remains of the most sought after actors on the market. Most of those terrific performances have been in action or dramatic roles because these types of roles are Tom Cruise's forte. However, that is not to say that he can't deliver in a comedic role. In fact he has, twice. His performances in the side splitting comedies "Tropic Thunder" and "Austin Powers in Goldmember" showed audiences and producers all over the world that he could deliver as a character actor as well. Although his roles in both of these movies were not much more than cameos, they are well remembered and really helped the success of both movies.
"Tropic Thunder" is one of the better comedies to come out in recent years. It stars Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr and Jack Black as various movie stars who are cast to recreate a story about the Vietnam War. Tom Cruise plays the over the top, eccentric, and bald (yes, bald) high powered producer who is in charge of the movie's production. From his constant berating of his assistant and his rookie director, played by Steve Coogan, to his boot-shaking dance during the final credits; Tom Cruise delivers in this movie in a big way. He really showed the wacky, zany side of himself that we all now existed; especially after the outburst on the Oprah Winfrey show. Except this time, he used his zaniness for good. Overall, this movie is a must see, especially for anyone who is a fan of wacky comedies. Robert Downey Jr. really delivers as the Australian actor playing the African-American leader of the platoon.
"Austin Powers in Goldmember" is the third installment of the well-like Austin Powers series starring Mike Myers as Austin Powers. Overall, this movie is a bit lacking thanks to the lackluster writing which is basically just a collection of recycled jokes from the previous movies. Also, casting Beyonce Knowles as the lead was probably not the best idea in retrospect. However, Tom Cruise really delivers in his cameo role playing a fictitious version of Austin Powers. Cruise was only in the movie for a few minutes but his performance was one of the few scenes that stood out. This movie helped establish his skills as a comedic actor.
These movies may be available on your cable or satellite TV's depending on your subscription. If you can't catch them for free on your satellite TV, make sure and rent "Tropic Thunder". It is every bit worth the rental price.
