2.Lane Cove National Park in Chatswood
There are over 25 individual picnic areas in Lane Cove National Park, so you are not likely to have to share a hotplate with seventeen other families and groups. You will need a car to get here though - see if somebody at your youth hostel in Sydney has already rented a camper, as the entry fee of $7 is charged per vehicle.
3.Bronte Park in Bronte
If you can't rustle up a vehicle, Bronte Park is easily accessible by public transport. It is well-known as the best spot in Sydney to grab a feed, so plan your barbeque for a weekday to minimize the crowds.
4.Centennial Park in the City Centre
The park was opened in 1901, a green oasis in the middle of the city. The park is enormous, but barbeques are fairly scattered. You might be well-served to hire a bike, because if the hotplate near your entrance is taken, it can be a long walk to find the next one. This does guarantee you a fair bit of privacy, though.

7.Lake Parramatta
Swimming is no longer allowed in the lake, but there are plenty if ducks to throw your crusts to! Again, the gas barbeques are free, the Lake is easy to get to via public transport, and there is plenty of shade to be found among the big oaks and sycamores.
