Commenting on the A2, Audi's Martin Winterkorn stated, "Contrary to popular belief, the A2 was not a cult car, but it was a car ahead of its time. Why did it not sell in large enough numbers? Because buyers never really fell in love the narrow and tall design. And because the bespoke high-tech aluminum spaceframe approach did not allow us to price the A2 sufficiently aggressively." (Isn't that what I just said?)
Audi has seen the light and the new A2 will be steel framed with low-cost but high-efficiency engines. When shopping at an Audi dealer, Reston customers should remember that the new model will not be available for a couple of years, but that here are plenty of other suitable Audi models to choose from in the meantime.
Audi officials say this new A2 will be a solution for metropolitan space restrictions. This model will be 146 inches and have a large luggage capacity. It will launch as a battery-powered, zero-emission model, running on a lithium-ion battery cell. The range is touted to be up to 60 miles. Impressive!
Rumors say the A2 also may be offered with a mysterious "hybrid drivetrain" which sounds impressive even if we don't know what it is. Reston Audi dealers will have an easy sell with this one. Oh, and there's a whole new family of Audi in the works. Its members will have three-cylinder engines with 1.2-liter diesel engines and from 60-75 horsepower.

Audi may well be on the way to the top with the savvy development of green cars, urban small cars and larger family cars with incredible mileage. This may compete well with some auto makers who are playing on nostalgia or leaning heavily on looks to bring in customers.
