The irresponsible twenty-something male learning to grow up is a character seen often in films. We know from the first scenes of irresponsible action that by the end of the movie our protagonist will have learned the errors of his ways. When a children's sports team is involved, even the cause of the change is rather inevitable. Coach brings no surprises to the table, but this doesn't mean it is a film without its charms. Even without any original elements, it manages to tell the unoriginal story well enough.
Nick (Hugh Dancy) is a trust-fund slacker with no need to grow up. His father left him with enough money that he has no need to find a job, and this has given him no need to mature or grow responsible either. This finally pushes Nick's girlfriend to leave him for a career in Hollywood, and he figures that the only way to get her back is by finding a job. Even after she has moved on, Nick realizes that he is well equipped for his job as a soccer coach to a neighborhood team. An injured player even gives Nick the opportunity to meet Gabrielle (Liane Balaban), a young doctor able to cause him to forget his ex-girlfriend.
The romantic comedy element of the film is uninspired, but works because of the charming Dancy. The film relies heavily on this rising star, with many predictable misunderstandings and mistakes that Nick must make for the plot to advance to real change and maturity. This is somewhat tiring to write, but much easier to watch in an 87-minute film.
