Discover The Rich Heritage of Bern Switzerland
Bern, the capitol of Switzerland is a city with plenty to do and can be a great place to start a trip to this lovely country. It is smack dab in the Swiss Mittelland (middle land) region, which makes it easy to reach many of Switzerlands more popular destinations. You might want to stay a while to explore this historic city which was added to UNESCOs world heritage list in 1983.
Bern was founded in 1191 makes this city almost one thousand years old, so you are sure to find some very interesting things while in Bern. Originally built as a fortress it offered protection on three sides with the River Aare providing the fourth. The city burned down in 1405 and had to be rebuilt with sandstone as one of the major building materials, and many of those buildings stand today. The clock tower was the citys first gate and is an important landmark in Bern. You can watch the 800 year old clockwork figures perform every hour, and admire the new clock face which was added in 1530.
Tourist Attractions
If you take the time to walk by the Aare river you will come across the Nydeggbrucke bridge which offers a great view of the city. The Aare flows in a U-shape around the city, and from the bridge you can see the citys medieval history and architecture. If you are in Bern in the summer you can try rafting on the Aare. Guided tours let you explore the city from the water, and Aare Marzili Lido is a popular place to swim.
For another great view of the city try the Berner Munster cathedral. It was built in 1421 and is the largest sacred building in Switzerland. If you climb the tower you can see the city and the 12 metre-high stained glass windows. Not far from the Cathedral you find Albert Einsteins house where he developed the theory of relativity
Other Local Attractions
Bern has a great public transport system, which is clean, efficient and on time. A nice place for a picnic would be in Gurten park, which high on a hill overlooking the city. Gurten park is a favourite for family outings and has an adventure playground and miniature train rides for children. You will also find a restaurant and caf in the park as well.
If you decide to make Bern your base camp, Luzern is only an hour and a half away and could be the starting point for a trip into the alps, including the Jungfrau and Schilthorn. Just an hour from Bern, Interlaken stands between two of Switzerlands most spectacular lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. You could enjoy the lakes with boat cruises and quaint Swiss villages to explore.
If you decide to travel a little further try visiting some of the towns on lake Geneva. The city of Geneva is an amazing place and on the opposite end you find quaint towns like Vevey and Montreux. Both famous for a variety of things like the famous Montreux Jazz festival. If music is your thing, then you will want to take the time to book a night in a Montreux Hotel.
