Fluvanna Gold Captures Regular Season TJYFL Governors Championship

Fluvanna Gold Takes Regular Season TJYFL Championship

By Dr. Greg Domecq

The TJYFL schedule makers could not have asked for more!

On the final week of the regular season, there were only two undefeated teams remaining, and those two teams were set to meet for the regular season championship and the coveted number one seed in the upcoming play-offs. It was billed to be a knock-down, drag-out, battle of the Titans. Only one team would remain unblemished. The Fluvanna Gold team defeated the Charlottesville Black Knights 12-6 in a physical, hard-fought, emotion filled contest at the St. Anne's Belfield Turf Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Flucos used a patient ground attack as they were able to move the ball up and down the field during the first half, dominating the time of possession but unable to get on the scoreboard. "This was a very physical game by two very good teams," said Fluvanna coach Ricky Grimes. "We were certainly pleased by our ability to move the ball, but we were concerned about our inability to punch it into the end zone."

The U12 Gold team addressed their coaches concern as they rode the back of a 35 yard run by Caleb Grimes on the first possession of the second half that placed the ball on the one yard line. Grimes did the honors on the next play giving his team a 6-0 lead. The Black Knights responded with a lengthy drive of their own that stalled on the Fluvanna 20 yard line, and the ball went over on downs as the third quarter came to an end.

Just as they started the third quarter, the Flucos scored on their first possession of the fourth quarter. If the first touchdown drive was thunder, the second drive would be considered lightening as Jameel Wilson raced 80 yards up the right sideline to give the Flucos a 12-0 margin. But just as they did after the initial Fluvanna score, Charlottesville put together a 50 yard drive. This time, however, they capped the drive with an 18 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Trey Durrett to tight end Austin Hawk with four minutes left in the contest.

After Jameel Wilson secured possession of a short kick-off, the Flucos went back to their punishing ground game to churn out three first downs and run the clock out earning the regular season championship. "Charlottesville has been the dominant team in this level of TJYFL football for a number of years," said Coach Grimes. "We knew that we would have to play well to win the game. We feel very fortunate to be in the position in which we find ourselves."

It doesn't get any easier for the Fluco Gold team is now scheduled to face their county-rival Fluvanna Blue team next Sunday afternoon at 1pm at St. Anne's. " The Fluvanna Blue team has gotten better and better each week and might be the most improved team in the league from game 1 to game 6, " said assistant Fluvanna Gold coach Beau Campbell. "This is their bye-week so they have two weeks to prepare for us. I'm sure Coach Miles and his staff will be ready."

The second semi-final game scheduled for 2:30 pm will pit the 2 seed Black Knights of Charlottesville with the 3 seed Albemarle Patriots. In their first meeting of the year, the Knights edged the Patriots 14-7 in week 3. The triple header will also include a consolation game at 4 pm between Western Albemarle and Monticello who tied 6-6 during the opening week of the season.
