Steelmaking based on Oxygen is a methodology of the elementary manufacturing phases in which the Carbon Rich molten, also called pig iron, is transformed into steel. The LD converter was named after the Austrian Linz and Donawitz. Most of the manufactured metal world wide is produced through the essential oxygen furnace. Recent furnaces take an iron charge of 350 tons and later transform them into the desired metal in approximately 40 minutes or less in some cases. The LD converter is an enhanced version of the Bessemer converter as the air pushing is altered with oxygen blowing.

Pushing oxygen throughout a molten iron reduces the carbon ingredient within the alloy and modifies it into lower carbon steel.

The process is classified as Basic phase due to the PH of the re-fractions within the calcium oxide and finally the magnesium oxide that shapes the vessel into lines to resist the high temperature of the molten metal.

The first essential oxygen steelmaking operation was LD process development; it was maintained in 1952 through the "Voestalpine" in Linz - Austria. Some major manufacturing companies in the US did not switch to this process for many years, as the last Bessemer transformer was functioning commercially till 1968. The LD process displaced both the previously well known Siemens-Martin process, also they were known as the open hearth process, and the Bessemer process. European corporations displaced the open hearth furnaces with the BOF quickly after WWII, meanwhile the US companies were hesitating to let go the old techniques and gave the open hearths a shot. The first corporation in the U.S. that used this kind of furnace was McLouth in Trenton, Michigan.
