Ford maintains new car sales lead for September 2010. The registration plate change has helped boost overall new car sales in September, Ford maintained its clear UK market leadership again in September.

Official figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that Ford were the clear leaders in September and for the year to date. Ford new car registrations were 56,361 in September and 277,410 for the year so far. These sales have also helped Ford achieve a market share of 13.8% in September and 14.1% for year.

Ford's achievement is highlighted more when you consider the market in September was down 8.9% compared to last September when the scrappage scheme was still available. For the year to date the UK market is tracking up 7.8 per cent and for the full year 2010 sales are expected to exceed the total for 2009.

Many dealers includingFord Sussexhave reported that they clearly experienced a "quiet" September compared to last year. The number of people coming through the doors just has not been the same.

Ford's outstanding performance can be aligned with the success of the Fiesta; it was the UK best seller in September and for the year to date. The Fiesta alone captured 5.7 per cent of the market in September and 5.3 per cent for the year to date.

The Fiesta was not alone though, sales of the Ford Transit were up from 6,617 in September 2009 to 7,879 last month and for the year to date they increased from 28,579 to 34,683.
