How to Make a 3D Grid.

3-D grids are visual aides for drawing, whether on paper or a computer modeling program. The grid points allow artists or drafters to accurately determine and label the location of specific points in 3-D space. They can then draw lines between these points to depict complete objects, from simple boxes and buildings to more complex objects like trees and people. Making 3-D grids provides the initial skill needed to visualize 3-D space onto a 2-D surface for 3d model and free 3d model.

Instructions

Using a Modeling Program.

Open your modeling program and click in the top viewport. Click the "Create" menu, followed by the "Line" tool.

Click in the upper left of the window to place the first point of the top grid line and then drag right until the mouse pointer nearly reaches screen right. Click again to finish the first line.

Click the line, the press "Control-C" and "Control-V" to duplicate the guideline.

Click the "Move" tool and then drag downward a half-inch. Click to place the duplicate directly below the first grid line.

Press "Control-V" several more times to create more duplicates. Use the "Move" tool to evenly distribute these lines, down to the last line a short distance above screen bottom.

Click the "Create" menu's "Line" tool again and then click near the upper left of the screen. Drag downward until the mouse pointer reaches close to screen bottom.

Create and distribute duplicates of the vertical grid line across the screen's width.

Click in the "Perspective" view port to see the grid receding into 3-D free 3d model.

Drawing on Paper.

Turn a piece of regular typing paper (8.5 by 11 inches) so its long edge runs left to right.

Draw, with a pencil and ruler, a line parallel to the bottom of the page, within an inch of the bottom. Draw a point at the approximate center of this line and label the point "O" for "Origin." This point represents one of the grid corners.

Draw another horizontal line about 4 inches from the top of the page. This line will represent the horizon line, also known as eye level.

Draw a point slightly to the right of the page's left edge, along the upper horizontal line. Label the point "vp1" for "vanishing point 1." Draw and label "vp2" slightly to the left of the page's right edge.

Draw lines connecting "O" with "vp1" and "vp2." These are baselines for the 3-D grid.

Use a rule to make regularly spaced hash marks along the bottom horizontal line, to the left and right of the Origin. Label these marks with numbers that increase the further away the mark is from the origin.

Lightly draw a line directly upward from the Origin until it crosses the upper horizontal line. Label the crossing point "A."

Draw two points, one slightly to the left and one the same distance to the right of "A," along the upper horizontal line. Label the left point "B" and the right "C." These points enable projection of the grid hash marks onto the baselines.

Draw (lightly) lines from "B" to each of the hash marks to the right of the Origin along the lower horizontal line. Do the same with point "C" and the marks left of the origin.

Draw lines from vp1 to the places where the lines from the previous step intersect the right baseline. Draw lines from vp2 to the intersections on the left baseline to complete the 3-D grid free 3d model.
