From Rags to Riches - How to Use Silk Scarves and Shawls to Glam up Casual Attire

All of us have our own unique styles and tastes. Open up one woman's closet and you might find rows of smart business suits and elegant cocktail dresses, but open up another's and you could be faced with endless pairs of jeans, leggings and casual skirts. If you tend more towards the latter, trying to dig out something a tiny bit more glamorous could prove to be a challenge. With a range of hand painted scarves and shawls to choose from though, sprucing up your look will be quick and easy.

Add Style to Jeans

There's a saying that goes 'It's not what you wear but how you wear it that counts' and nothing could be truer of a humble pair of jeans. Although they might be the ultimate in casual wear, just a simple tweak can turn them into a smart fashion statement. For an instant update to a tired pair of denims, simply take a long silk scarf and feed it through the belt loops. You can either start and finish at the two front loops or off-center at the hip. Whichever is your preference, you can finish by tying or looping the ends of the scarf, continuing to feed them through the loops so that they are tucked out of sight, or simply leaving the extra fabric to hand freely. Another simple trick for adding glam appeal to jeans is simply to tie a short scarf around one of the belt loops and let the ends fall naturally.

Jazz up Leggings

Most women have at least one pair of leggings in their closet and usually, although not always, they are worn for comfort rather than to make a particular fashion statement. By folding a square scarf or shawl into a triangle, wrapping it around the waist or hips over the top of leggings and tying it to one side, you can transform them into a fashionable and chic ensemble which will look great with a simple pair of ballet pumps or high heels.

Breathe New Life into a Plain, Casual Skirt

Casual skirts which are plain in color can often look rather understated, but given the silk scarf treatment they too can take on a new lease of life. If the skirt has belt loops, then you can simply do as suggested for jeans. If not, you can create a beautifully feminine, multi-layered effect by tying a silk shawl over the top.

Concentrate on the Top Half

Even if you are quite happy to wear jeans, leggings or casual skirts as they are, silk scarves and shawls can still be used to glam up your overall look in more traditional ways. A stunning hand painted scarf which is tied, looped or even just hung around the neck will draw attention away from tired denims and make for a much more classic look. A hand dyed shawl, meanwhile, will add instant elegance to just about any casual outfit.
