They are mainly found in the sourthern part of Kenya. They are mainly nomads and believe that the God of rain, Engai gave them all cattle in the wolrd for safe keeping. They believe that this happened when the earth and sky split and the cattle landed on thier land. As a result of thinking that they are the rightful owners off all the cattle, they see nothing wrong with stealing them freom other communities.
The masai tribe are one people in KENYA who have tried to fight westernization as much as they can. Most have remained nomadic herdsmen and move from place to place looking for pasture and water for their animals. They greatly opposed the introduction of formal education in the comunity. They argued that a herdsman does not require to go to school to learn how to herd the animals. They have slowly embraced the formal system of education especially more for the boy child than the girl child.
The masai tribe is finding life more difficult as the country becomes more developed and embraces the western culture. Grazing land is limited and they can not move around with their animals as much as they would have wanted to. The government is forcing the community to educate and take more care of the girl child as she was formerly neglected by the society. Some of the masai tribe have now started farming to substitute thier income from selling the livestock. Some also make and sell masai artifacts and jewel. This is very popular all over the world.
