Being familiar enough with another one of Vincenzo Natali's films, "Cube", made me think this might have something. Seeing the trailer and seeing what it was about made me think I could be wrong. There was no reason for it any more than my own tendency to shy away from sci-fi horror. I realize there are some great ones out there and I enjoy those every chance I get, but the fringe stuff isn't something I'm a fan of. I did go in to this film doing my best to put away that bias before it started. Watching it though, didn't really change my mind.

The movie opens with the audience participating in the birthing process of a clinical study that two highly taught genetic scientists, Clive Nicoli (Adrien Brody) and Elsa Kast (Sarah Polley), have created to coexist with another creature in the hopes of synthesizing a protein that will help in the prevention of many human diseases. The two scientists are thrilled , along with the rest of their colleagues, when the birth seems to be a success. After this success they discuss with their superiors how much they would like to continue with the splicing of genes and bring up how they think they could successfully splice a human gene with a number of other subjects in the hopes of recreating an even more widespread protein to help in human survival. The heads of the company explain how that would be a fine study, but later down the line. Now that they had the male and female trials they wanted to shut down the splicing research and get to finding the protein from the two subjects before the unveiling in front of the board members. This wasn't something Elsa was too happy about so she wanted to take it upon herself to just see if they could successfully create such a subject. After talking Clive into it, they get to work and do just what they set out to do. Once they can see it can be done, Clive is ready to put it on ice until deemed ready to pull out for the higher ups. Again, Elsa wants to push it just a little more. They discuss seeing how far they can go and then agree on termination at a point when they feel it is "far enough". The incubation period of their new subject takes much less time than expected and things start getting complicated on how far is too far with clinical study HG 50, who would later become Dren (Delphine Chaneac). At this point they continue asking the question, "What is the worst that could happen?"

The acting in the movie was easily the best part. Brody was right on the mark as the geeky lead. Polley plays her part a little too well as the movie begins to unfold and little secrets begin coming to light. The supporting cast did a good job, as well. There wasn't a lot of face time for the rest of them as the film was dominated by the two leads and their new find. Chaneac also made the most with her role as well, which was no easy task.

The effects were more of the creature variety and they were interesting, but nothing groundbreaking. The changes in HG 50 were nicely done all the way up to the always changing features of Dren. Low body count made it much easier to focus on that aspect of the movie, which is what the movie is about, so I suppose money well spent

The movie was not something that interested me in the end. It wasn't that it was bad or done terribly, I just couldn't get behind the story as much I wanted to. As I mentioned that wasn't the actors fault, for me it was more of a writing issue. I'm also saying all of this letting people know how I feel about this subgenre to begin with, so take that for what you will. The revelations weren't that big of deal to me and in the end took the long way around to get there. I found that there were other plot lines that I was more interested in and already knew where it was headed halfway through the movie. Nothing wrong with that, but all the great work done on making the movie was outdone by the slow pace and anti-climatic ending for me. At least it wasn't a remake.
