There have been numerous debates on whether uniforms are important and if they are required for educational institutes and other professional institutions. There have been many points that have been raised for and against uniforms. The points against Uniform include arguments that these are forced upon people, under the pretext of discipline. Additionally, that with the raising prices of uniforms, they only add unnecessary. These are some of the many cons that people have discussed extensive.
However, there are some positive and practical reasons why uniforms are easier and more relevant. They main reasons can be broadly described as follows:
Equality: Uniform is a great leveller. Meaning that once you belong to an institution it makes everyone equal. This means that an individual backgrounds or social status is not flaunted, for everyone to see. This leads to lesser competition amongst people and less distractions. This, in some sense also controls peer pressure.
Discipline: Wearing a uniform automatically disciplines people. Their attitude to work is enhanced, because they are already representatives of the institution or school. The discipline that is important to the institute is automatically relevant to the people wearing the uniform. They also become representatives of the institution and the discipline it stands for.
Belonging and confidence: Most people, especially children, have a need to feel like they belong to something. There is a need for people to feel like comrades. A uniform, at a very basic and cosmetic level provides that sense of belonging and a common identity. This invariable improves their confidence levels.
Better behaviour and Rules: The minute people, more importantly children, get out of fashion clothes and get into uniforms they start to represent the institutions that they are from. This means that the values and statutes of the institution are automatically imposed on to them. This ensures better behaviour and the implementation of rules.
Bullying: The starting point is who the person is and not what the person is wearing. This means that a person is not defined by the clothes one wear, thereby, levelling everyone. This invariable leads to less scope for bullying with a school uniform.
Practical: Usuallyuniforms are designed with practical purpose keeping in mind the kind of work or activity the person wearing it would perform. Additionally, it's designed to withstand wear and tear and adventures better than fashion centric clothes.
Ease: For amore practical reason mornings become easier. This is cause it removes the "what to wear" dilemma every morning. People will not wake up wondering what they should wear for the day, because they have just one option the uniform to wear.
Identity: Uniform gives the school or institution a profile in the community, which means that they will be easily identifiable. Meaning that professionals are easily identified by the uniform the wear, like the army, the navy, nurses etc. Therefore, it is easier to identify them and work with them.
Branding and Identification: For institutions, it also acts as a branding identity. Meaning that every time the person goes out, the institution name is advertised as part of the uniform. For children in schools, it helps in the most practical way to identify them when they are out of school trips etc.
