The Bugatti Veyron is a mid engined grand touring car and itsSuper Sport version is the fastest road-legal car on the planet.

So what is really interesting about this car?

Well, first of all,it has been designed and developed by theGerman Volkswagen Group and produced byBugatti Automobiles SAS at their headquarters in Chteau St. Jean inMolsheim (Alsace,France). The Veyron's chief designer was Hartmut Warkuss. The exterior was designed by Jozef Kaba of Volkswagen, with much of the engineering work being conducted under the guidance of former Peterbilt engineer and now Bugatti Engineering chief Wolfgang Schreiber.

The car is named after French racing driverPierre Veyron, who won the24 hours of Le Mans in 1939 while racing for the originalBugatticompany.

Performance

The Veyron features an 8.0 litreW16 engine with sixteen cylinders in four banks of four, equivalent to two narrow-angleV8 engines mated in aW configuration.The engine is fed by fourturbochargers anddisplaces 7,993cubiccentimeters, with a square 86 by 86 mm bore and stroke. The Veyron has achievedan average maximum speed of 431.072km/h.

The Veyron comes in special versions such as Pur Sang, Fbg Par Hermes,Sang Noir,Bleu Centenaire,Grand Sport,Grand Sport Sang Bleu, Grand Sport Grey Carbon and theSuper Sport.

Sales Figures

As of 2008, 304 units were sold worldwide.

On Top Gear, the car received pretty good comments from all the three presenters.Jeremy Clarkson declared the Veyron "the greatest piece of engineering ever. No, I'm sorry, thisis the greatest car ever made and the greatest car we will ever see in our lifetime."James Mayproclaimed that the Veyron is "ourConcorde moment". To review the car, Clarkson drove from Alba, northern Italy to London whilst racing James May andRichard Hammond who were travelling in aCessna 182 aeroplane.
